Cacao Mylkshake Breakfast Smoothie NOM

Good Morning everyone!

Today I wanted to share with you a smoothie that I go back to time and time again. It is a classic, but I love it. Drinking chocolate mylkshakes in the morning makes me feel like I’m being cheeky with zero guilt!

I keep referring to this concoction as both a mylkshake and a smoothie as it is both – it just depends on who you’re serving it too! Kids and people after a chocolatey drink = mylkshake. Health conscious people or cleansers or who ever else  = Smoothie.

It’s a mylk based liquid NOM that’s all we need to know.

Organic Cacao powder is used in this drink to make it not just delicious, but great for your body too for all of these reasons!

  1. Jam packed full of anti oxidants – to get the full absorption it is advised to avoid drinking cacao with dairy products as that can prevent you gaining the full benefit! (Not that I advocate dairy in any case!)
  2. Source of sulfur which will help maintain shiny hair & strong nails.
  3. One of the highest concentrations of magnesium which means that it creates energy and can combat fatigue (for those who have or have had adrenal burn out it is best to minimise your intake of cacao as it can over stimulate your adrenals) That said, the magnesium does help to lower blood pressure too!
  4. Weight loss! Yes – chocolate can help you lose weight! This is because cacao contains natural MAO inhibitors that suppress your appetite. (No I am not condoning skipping meals or cutting out anything – use cacao WITH meals)
  5. Age reducing! Ok so it doesn’t turn back the clock – but the polyphenol antioxidants protect our cells from oxidising too early therefor keeping us looking younger!
  6. Good time release! Cacao is an aphrodisiac – oh yes it is! It has a mood enhancing property that releases the same endorphins as when we fall in love or during sex! This is why you are often given chocolate on valentines day – although most chocolate that is actually gifted has non of this property left after all of the processing!

Cacao Mylkshake Breakfast Smoothie NOM Recipe

1.5 frozen bananas (at least 6 hours)

2 tbsp cacao powder (or cacao from cacao love )

1 tbsp maple

1 tbsp chia seeds

3/4 cup filtered water

3/4 cup almond mylk


Add everything into a blender and blitz until smooth- I use a nutri bullet!


To gain a thicker more luxurious smoothie, ensure your bananas are fully frozen as this creates a lovely creamy texture.

I use half water, half mylk to reduce the fat content as this is a nice big smoothie recipe! (Not that fat is bad – just personal preference) feel free to use 1.5 cups of mylk if you would prefer!

After Sam baked this today, I asked him if he would marry me it was that good! He said no of course, BUT. Considering Sam doesn’t bake and I left him to it. He nailed it. This cake is just perfect. Slightly crisp on the edge but gorgeously moist in the middle.

250 ml Soya Milk

100 ml Water

200 g Dates (pitted and halved)

1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

115 g Vegan Spread

115 g Soft Brown Sugar

200 g Self Raising Flour

1/8 tsp Nutmeg

1/4 tsp Ground Ginger

1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon



1. Heat up the oven to 190°C

2. Throw the dates into a saucepan and cover with the soya milk and the water. Bring to a simmer until the dates have softened.

3. Turn the heat off and add the bicarbonate of soda, it should start to froth. When this reaction has happened, leave the mixture to cool.

4. Whilst the date mix cools, beat the sugar and the butter until it is a lovely light pale colour.

5. Add the cooled date mix into the creamed butter / sugar combo and stir until it is evenly combined.

6. Add the spices into the flour and sieve into the wet ingredients.

7. Pour the mix into a loaf tin and bake for around 30 minutes (oven dependent). The sponge should bounce back when poked!

8. Demolish.

The Re9 collection is their anti aging range…  you may be thinking that at 21 I’m too young to be worried about this! But it’s the ideal age to start using anti aging creams. Women stop producing Collagen at 25 so I am trying to “preserve” my collagen! I don’t know if that is how it really works, I made that up! But it’s wishful thinking right! I would rather try and prevent the wrinkles occurring than try to fix them later!

I have taken a before picture when I started using the Re9 as a little experiment to see what result I get after a couple of weeks! I’ll let you know how I get on!

Chilli Non Carne

I love nothing better than a huge bowl of Chilli and all the trimmings!

I want to share with you my “go to” 3 bean Chilli! I have adapted a couple of recipes to create my perfect concoction. We love this dish so much we make it once a week – this recipe feeds two High Carb Low Fat vegans for two evenings!! It is also perfect for entertaining (even if all your guests aren’t vegan)



This chilli is fab if you are short for time as it only takes 25 mins from start to bowl, it doesn’t need much attention, it creates barely any mess and you can make your side dishes while it simmers on the hob.

Last night I accompanied my chilli with home baked nachos and crispy kale!

Kitchen Essentials: Food

I used to be the kinda person who could happily pop to the shop every night and decide what I am eating there and then! But since I became a High Carb Low Fat Vegan, you really get to know what your “must have” staples are.

I always have the following foods and I make sure I have lots of them! The first shop when you stock up on all of the items will be more expensive, but once you have everything its just a matter of topping up!

TOP TIP: keep an eye out for when your favourite tins are on offer and stock right up! (Recently I bought 12 tins of Chopped Tomatoes because my favourite brand were on offer!)

Beans and Legumes


I always make sure I have around 3 cans of each.

  • Black Beans
  • Cannellini Beans
  • Chick Peas
  • Red Kidney Beans



Keep around 3 bags of each, for two people you can use up to a whole bag in a sitting!

  • Brown Rice
  • Bulgur Wheat
  • Cous Cous
  • Polenta
  • Quinoa
  • Spelt Spaghetti
  • Whole wheat Pasta

Herbs and Spices


Super important for adding flavour to every dish!

  • Black Pepper Corns
  • Chilli Powder
  • Ground Coriander
  • Ground Cumin
  • Curry Powder
  • Mixed Herbs
  • Oregano
  • Paprika


  • Chopped Tomatoes – I love Napolina as they are really rich and are full of flavour which is great when your making a simple dish.

Tips for Vegan Newbies

1 Keep it simple!


You don’t have to be savvy in the kitchen, find yourself a minimum of three basic recipes that you can go back to time and time again without being bored. Experiment in-between, there is going to be some things you make that sound phenomenal but taste like crap. DON’T be disheartened. Just make a go-to dish the next night, and try again another day!

2 Eat up!

Day Off

There will be times when people will say to you “Can’t you just have a day off” as they munch down on a cream cake. If you have eaten enough, then this won’t be a problem, it’s easy to say no when you’re full!

3 Read up!


You will be asked all sorts of questions, the best thing you can do is know your stuff. Try not to get defensive, as this is likely to put people off – you cant change everyone overnight! But do try to have reasonable, educated answers to as many questions as you can. You want them to walk away and think about what you have said. You want to make them inquisitive, so by doing some research you can be ready for anything.

4 Stock up!


Keep your cupboard essentials stocked up. When you have all the staples in the house, you will be able to throw something together without really having to think. It will save you time, and if you are able to buy in bulk, it will save money too!

Society is a funny thing.

You’re taught that you can be whatever you want to be as long as you put your mind to it… But as soon as you do something that is slightly “out of the ordinary” people shun you and make you feel like you are wrong for making certain choices.

So the reality is “You can be whatever you want to be as long as everyone else is being it too”

When I began changing the way I ate, people I work with started saying “Wow, you’re so healthy” “You’re by far the healthiest in the office” and “Look at her, she’s so energetic, I want what she’s on.” At this point, no one knew I had educated myself on what I was putting in my body but they could see the benefits of it less than a week into it.

That very same day I was asked what “diet” I was on. When I explained that I wasn’t on a diet, I had just decided to stop eating meat, fish and dairy their faces dropped… “What do you mean you’re not eating meat? We’re humans, we are made to eat meat” was one person’s reaction. “How are you going to get protein, we need protein and you get protein from meat. Calcium too, you need that from milk” was another. Someone else stumbled over and contributed “You’re muscles wont repair and you’ll get shin splints when you run”

Initially I was frustrated by their responses. I thought they were being deliberately awkward and wanted to defend their diet.

Now – a few weeks afterwards I have had time to think about their comments. I know that they had my best intentions at heart because of what we are taught through school and by our parents. They believe that through becoming Vegan I am going to be harming my body and starving it of the right nutrients.

Hello and welcome!!


I thought for my first ever post I would tell you a little bit about myself, first up.. I’m Toyah, I’m 21 and I love food.

I am not a qualified nutritionist, qualified PT or have any qualifications in fitness or health.. BUT I do have my own experiences, had my own battles and I am still finding new ways to live an easy, affordable, healthy life style! My aim of all this is to share my knowledge with you, to show you that it can be done. You don’t have to be rich to eat well. You don’t have to have someone else cook all your meals for you. I want to help you enjoy being healthy! No more faddy diets, no more dropping 10 lbs in a week then gaining 12 two weeks later. This is about showing you how to change your life, to give you long term results, to show you the light so that you don’t want to go back to those dark days when frozen Kiev’s win every time.

I am just your average Jo! I went to school, I went to college, I got into a long-term relationship, and got comfortable. By comfortable, I actually mean real fat. My clothes got very tight aka not realising I was ballooning but still wearing size 10’s! I soared from around 10 stone to 11 stone 9 in about 8 months. That’s a whopping 25 lbs, and given I am only 5ft 2 this sure did show! Since my day of recognition – which was a long time coming – I have changed my life completely. Gone were the days of Chicken Kievs, Mexican Potato Wedges and baked beans, coming in from work and vegetating for hours in front of back to back Dexter (even though he is some sort of god), in were the days of working out, cooking meals and actually spending some time chatting and having fun with the boyf! Each day is something new, I have lost 41lbs, but don’t mistake this as the end of my journey! I may be 25% lighter than I was, but this is just the beginning.
